"I knew I wanted to start and end the piece with the kind of majestic theme that brass instruments do so well, but the music between those themes featured everything from African rhythms to the sounds of a typewriter captured by the then-emerging technology of sampling. But with ten minutes of pre-recorded material and affordable computer storage not being what it is today, we had to sync our live performance to a sixteen-track analog tape deck, which required the brass players to wear headphones and follow a click track, and Mr. Giordano (in full tuxedo) to be on stage with us to do the mixing."
