GUITARIST Charlie Byrd always wanted to play a brass instrument, but as he confesses in the notes to his new album, "Byrd & Brass," his attempts to master the trumpet in his youth met with little success. So now he's gone out and done the next best thing: recorded a thoroughly enjoyable album with the Annapolis Brass Quintet. READ MORE
Charlie Byrd was schooled in both jazz and classical music. Byrd played modern jazz on un-amplified Spanish guitar even before the Stan Getz–Charlie Byrd Jazz Samba album. That 1962 album launched the Bossa nova in the U.S. Byrd went on to fuse jazz and Brazilian music in dozens of graceful, lyrical albums.
Reference books such as Who’s Who in America and Leonard Feather’s Encylopedia of Jazz list Charlie Byrd’s occupation as “musician” or “guitarist.” It is as a performer on the guitar, of course, that he is best known, but he composed enough music to be called a composer, and he could be described as a club owner because at times he played that role successfully too. As a result of his world tours, sometimes under the auspices of the U.S. State Department, Byrd was a also a cultural envoy and an ambassador of good will.
Most significantly, Charlie Byrd was a builder of bridges--making connections among various musical genres and diverse audiences. With Byrd & Brass, the Charlie Byrd Trio and the Annapolis Brass Quintet forged a new bridge between jazz and brass chamber music.
