William Schmidt has made the composition of works for brass somewhat of a specialty in his musical expression.  In his Music for Scrimshaws the composer regards the pairing of harp and brass as complimentary, the combination of feminine and masculine, with the feminine represented by the harp.  The work is divided into three movements which express different kinds of songs and temperaments.
1. "Of the Sea and Ships" - The introduction of the movement serves as a ritornello between different settings of the tune Hearts of Gold.  The metric alternation between 3/4 and 4/4 offers a rhythmic interest characteristic of some sea songs of the early nineteenth century.
2. "Of Whales and Whaling" - Coast of Peru is introduced by a harp solo followed by a set of short variations.  The treatment is mainly between two-part writing in the harp and subdued forces in the brass.
3. "Of Sailors and Maidens Fair" - This movement consists of a potpourri of several songs, introduced by a fanfare (ritornello) based on the Turkish Lady.  This is followed by Lovely Caroline, ritornello, Lily of the West, ritornello and finally The Captain Calls All Hands, which climaxes with the full ensemble and ends with a soft harp passage.

"Heidi Lehwalder as soloist startled, astounded and thoroughly delighted the entire audience with her spectacular command of the innovations and felicitous passages of the concerto." - Washington Post
