William Joseph Schmidt, Jr. was born in 1926 in Chicago, Illinois. He began playing the saxophone at the age of six and was playing professionally by the time he was twelve. After serving as a Navy musician from 1944-46 he attended Chicago Musical College before moving to Los Angeles in 1952 where he studied with composer Ingolf Dahl at the University of Southern California. After receiving his Master's in Music Composition Schmidt rejoined the Navy during the Korean War, serving as a musician and arranger on the USS Tarawa in the Mediterranean. In 1959 he formed Avant Music publishing company which is now known as WIM (Western International Music, Inc). Much of the music of William Schmidt was influenced by jazz and folk music. His 160 compositions and 470 arrangements are primarily written for brass, woodwind and percussion in a variety of settings.
