"The second movement starts off with a kind of animated cluster in the brass quintet. This is taken up in canon by the woodwinds and broadened, reaching a climax which triggers an entrance by an off-stage brass trio. A dialogue now follows between the two brass groups and the winds, and this in turn leads to the string's entrance (octave Ab). Strings and brass surge antiphonally against trills in the woodwinds and percussion, and this sound gradually dies away, leading to a version of the opening in the individual strings. A new figure (really the old slow trill, embellished by a turn) now follows -- first in the winds, then the brass quintet and finally the off-stage trio. After this in turn quiets down, there is a brief recapitulation. A new rising figure makes its appearance, becomes more and more insistent, and finally ushers in the third movement."
"This movement ("fast and playfully") exploits the rapidly articulated staccato so idiomatic to the brass quintet. The brass trio, having joined the orchestra during the last part of the previous movement, enlarges the quintet or answers it as part of the orchestra. For the rest, the movement is a pretty straightforward rondo and probably requires no further comment."
