DAVID W. MAVES:
Brass Quintet
Brass Quintet by David Maves was written in 1974 in response to an announcement by the Annapolis Brass Quintet. This work was awarded first prize and subsequently performed by the ABQ for audiences throughout the U.S. and Europe.
In the words of the composer, "The three movements -- I Presto, II Presto, III Adagio-Presto Subito -- are explorations of brass articulations and expressiveness. The musical notation expands the usual brass vocabulary while punctuated by more rational fanfare figures. Both free notation and improvisatory sections are notated with approximations that suggest the scope and kind of music desired."

Annapolis Brass Quintet was founded in 1971 as America's first full-time performing brass ensemble. Dedicated to expanding brass chamber music repertoire, the ABQ announced its first composition contest in 1974 to encourage composers to write music for brass quintet. All works submitted were to be studied, rehearsed and evaluated by the ABQ, and one work would be selected to receive a cash award and to be performed throughout the United States and Europe by the Annapolis Brass Quintet. The composition selected to receive this award was Brass Quintet by David Maves.1975 Photo of Annapolis Brass Quintet
