Ludwig Maurer was German violinist and composer. A precocious child, he began concertizing by the age of eleven, and at seventeen moved to Russia where he served as house musician to Russian aristocrats for ten years. He subsequently performed throughout Europe and lived in Berlin, Paris and Dresden, before returning to St. Petersburg.
Maurer produced two operas, Der neue Paris in1826 and Aloise in1828, and wrote many stage pieces. With Aliabiev and Ver-stovsky, he contributed the music to Chmelnitsky’s comedy A Novel Prank (Theatrical Combat) in 1822. His body of chamber works includes ten violin concertos, six string quartets, and twelve pieces for brass quintet. <Return
