Jiří Pauer's Charaktery
(Characters) for brass quintet

Picture
Composer Jiri Pauer: b. 1919 - d.2007

Jiří Pauer (1919 - 2007) was born into the family of a coal miner, and his way to a career as a composer was rather complicated. He started as a music teacher, and studied composition privately with Otakar Šín.  He studied with Alois Haba at the Prague Conservatory, and did post-graduate work at the Academy of Performing Arts and Music in Prague.

Pauer was to become one of Czechoslovakia's most highly regarded composers, capable of widely diverse styles, from serial and strict 12-tone row to traditional tonal-centered music.  He has a catalog of works in virtually all media, including opera, orchestra, vocal and chamber music.   Read More

In the 1970's Jiří Pauer began to write extensively for brass instruments, including a Concerto for trumpet and orchestra, followed by Trompettina, Trombonetta  and Tubonetta.

Charaktery, Pauer's first composition for brass quintet, was completed in February, 1978, bearing a dedication to the Annapolis Brass Quintet.  Of this work (which translates as "Characters") Jiří Pauer wrote, ". . . there exists not only human characters, but also characters of different instruments, in an orchestra characters of instrumental groups, and in this case characters of trumpets, horn and trombones."

Thirteen years later, Washington Post music critic Charles McCardell wrote, "It was Czechoslovak composer Jiří Pauer's 'Charaktery' that shone brightest. The work's distribution of activity requires five strong musical personalities -- a perfect fit for the Annapolis Brass Quintet."
