About his Ensembles for Brass Quintet George Heussenstamm writes
Ensembles for Brass Quintet is in a single continuous movement that is divided into 30 sections.  Naming it Ensembles reflects my concept of drawing sub-groups from the full quintet.  Every tutti section is separated by two sections of various sub-groups, i.e. solos, duets, trios, and quartets, and in its final measures, the horn actually leaves the group and is heard playing its last passage at a distance (off stage) from the other players.
