HERMAN STEIN'S MOCK MARCH
Herman Stein, composer, pianist, teacher
(b. Philadelphia 19 August 1915 - d. Los Angeles 26 March 2007)
Herman Stein began playing piano at the age of three and gave his first public recital at six. He taught himself orchestration and was arranging professionally by the age of 15. During the 1930s and '40s he composed and arranged for radio programs and jazz orchestras, including work for Count Basie, Bob Crosby, Fred Waring and others. Herman Stein moved to Los Angeles in 1948 and joined Universal Studios as a staff composer in 1951. Stein composed music for nearly 200 films, including westerns, comedies and several sci-fi and horror classics, including the Creature from the Black Lagoon. He also composed two chamber ensemble works, Sour Suite for woodwind quintet and Mock March for brass quintet.
