Heinrich Schütz (1585 - 1672)
In his 1619 publication, the Psalmen Davids, German composer Heinrich Schütz explored ways of adapting the polychoral techniques he learned while studying in Venice to his native tongue and Lutheran ritual. His "Singet dem Herrn" employs sweeping melismatic patterns for the phrases "trumpets and sacbuts," "let the sea roar," "floods," and "let the mountains be joyful." The lesser doxology ("Glory be to the Lord . . .") concludes the piece; unusual for Schütz, the beginning of the doxology recalls the opening lines of the entire work.
Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied (1619)

(Psalm setting with Doxology)

Daniel Pinkham (1923 - 2006)
Daniel Pinkham was an American composer, organist and harpsichordist. For forty-two years (1958--2000), Pinkham was the organist of King's Chapel in Boston. As a composer, Pinkham's enormous output represents a broad cross-section of 20th-century musical trends, though the preponderance of his music is religious in nature, is choral, and frequently includes organ. Daniel Pinkham's Christmas Cantata (Sinfonia Sacra) was written for chorus, brass and organ, and has become his most famous work.
