Martin's other passion was teaching.  He taught at Norwegian summer music camps for 25 years and served as professor of low brass and music theory at Winthrop University from 1987 until his retirement in 2017.  His students often remarked on his dry sense of humor and his ability to get across difficult concepts in music theory. Martin transcribed several compositions for trombone and for brass quintet, and he also conducted a variety of community and university music groups.

Martin enjoyed talking about his times touring with the ABQ, and especially the summers they served as resident ensemble at the Norwegian music camp.  Martin always treasured the experiences with the quintet to travel throughout the U.S. and Europe, to meet so many interesting people, and to perform difficult, challenging, innovative and wonderful music.

There are so many stories and memories of his and our time with the Annapolis Brass Quintet.  Some important milestones in our lives occurred while Martin was playing with the ABQ.  And it also afforded me travel opportunities I never would have had otherwise.

Martin especially valued the desire he
and all ABQ members shared:

To rehearse until they got it right!
