DANIEL SPEER: TWO SONATAS (1688)
&

LUDWIG MAURER: SUITE (1803)

Two Sonatas

for five brass by Daniel Speer

German composer Daniel Speer (1636 - 1707) was one of the few composers of his time who wrote specifically for brass ensemble. These sonatas are the first three from the Turckischer Eulen-Spiegel, a musical collection published in 1688 by Speer who signed the work with the anagram Res Plena Dei, an understandable diversion, since his political writings had previously earned him four years of imprisonment and exile from Germany. Suite

for five brass by Ludwig Maurer
Although German violinist and composer Ludwig Wilhelm Maurer (1789-1878) was born some 150 years after Daniel Speer, he too was one of the few composers of his time who wrote specifically for brass ensemble. The pieces comprising this Suite by Maurer are three of his Zwölf Kleine Stüke (Twelve Short Pieces) which were first published in St. Petersburg in 1881. Read More
